Dr. Johnson
is the director of the Life Quality Institute. He also leads the palliative-care initiative for Kaiser Permanente.  When a patient has a palliative-care team assigned, Kaiser has a goal of 15 minutes (any time of day or night) to respond to a patient at home on issues/ concerns/problems.  Dr. Johnson has data to show this is cost effective relative to a patient going to emergency care.

ABOUT LIFE QUALITY INSTITUTE (LQI):

LQI drives the issue of palliative care, advocating within Colorado for this and training healthcare providers.  LQI has delivered over 85,000 hours of education since 2003, its date of founding.  It was originally associated with the Denver Hospice but is now a separate 501(c) 3.

LQI’s MISSION/VISION is:
Life Quality Institute supports the achievement of best quality of life for people with advanced disease by educating healthcare professionals, students, and communities about palliative care and supporting the growth and development of palliative care clinical services.

LQI advocates a team-based approach to relieve patient suffering. This team works with the patient and family in four phases:

1.    Goals clarification

2.    Advance planning

3.    Emotional/psychosocial/spiritual issues
